Designing sliding patio doors are a necessity when planning the entry from the outdoor patio or garden into the home. The are many reasons for purchasing a sliding door versus a door that swings open, one is that it does not take up as much space.

They make the room seem larger and lighter than a traditional door with small window. There are various types of blinds or curtains specifically designed for sliding glass doors. For added warmth and ease of use vertical blinds are often used.

When you are going on vacation it is important to be protected from intruders that the sliding patio doors are properly locked. The locking mechinism on the door should not be the only source of security. For added locking security a stick or dowel placed in the track can keep intruders out.

Probably the hardest part of having sliding patio doors is keeping the glass clean, especially with small children. There are several good brands of excellent glass cleaners that don't leave streaks and take of those greasy handprints. When the sun shines on the windows it will reveal every little speck of dirt or handprint. Installing patio door blinds may help this situation.

Be sure to run a vacuum cleaner hose inside the bottom track at least weekly to keep the track free of dirt and debris and the sliding patio doors sliding easily. Applying some oil every couple of weeks will also keep the slides and rollers moving easily, but always vacuum out the track before oiling to keep the dirt from clumping into a ball, effectively stopping the door from sliding.
